Frequently Asked Questions

What does Sustainably Sourced Cocoa mean?

The concept of ‘sustainably sourced’ spans three dimensions: social (for example, ensuring workers are treated fairly), economic (increasing profits, improving quality of life), and environmental (managing land, water, and biodiversity so they aren’t lost to future generations).

Sustainably Sourced Cocoa means that the cocoa complies with social and environmental quality standards. Chocolatier partners with the Rainforest Alliance Cocoa Certification program to ensure our cocoa is sustainably sourced. Please visit www.ra.org for more information.

Do you use palm oil?

All of our Pure Milk, Pure Dark and Pure White Chocolate products do not contain Palm oil.

Chocolatier Australia works hard to ensure that we procure palm oil free raw materials.

Our raw material specifications are always for palm oil free products in all instances or if necessary Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified for most of the ingredients. For more information please see www.rspo.org

Should you keep chocolate in the fridge?

Chocolate should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place which is free of strong odours.

Ideally chocolates are best stored in low humidity (less than 55%), between 14-18 degrees (centigrade), so refrigeration is not necessary. However, if you live in a warm climate, the fridge may be your best option (but make sure your chocolate is stored in an air-tight container).

Chocolate absorbs odours easily, so keep it away from anything with a strong smell (garlic, vanilla, scented oils etc).

Finally, your chocolate should also be kept away from curious pets, strong light/sunlight and insects and pests!

Are your products Halal?

Chocolatier Australia is not Halal Certified.

Is your packaging recyclable?

When it comes to the packaging of our products, we need to comply with and consider:

  • Australian Food Safety Standards.

  • Consumer expectations that our products are fresh, great tasting, and look good.

  • The need to showcase our beautiful chocolates while keeping them airtight and free of impurities/bugs/tampering etc.

  • A growing expectation among our customers that we will only use packaging that is fully recyclable.

About 90% of Chocolatier Australia’s packaging is fully recyclable, provided the recycling infrastructure is in place. Our trays and blisters are made from PET plastics (number 1 recyclable) which most councils will recycle. All our cartons are paper-based and are therefore fully recyclable in Australia. However, like all food providers, food safety requirements mean some of our paper based packaging has to have a food grade coating, and some councils are unable to recycle paper that has been coated in this way. Please check with your provider.

Our flow wrapped chocolates are wrapped in OPP and BOPP film, which is fully recyclable, but many councils cannot recycle these types of plastics due to sorting or capacity issues. Supermarkets that offer recycling options and council resource recovery centres will often take these soft plastics to recycle if your kerbside recycler is unable to process them.

In addition, the majority of our wholesale shipping packaging is made from recycled paper products which are also fully recyclable. Where possible, we try to use recycled products in our retail packaging also.

As a business, we endeavour to try and find the best packaging options for our products, and will continue to look for improved materials going forward.

What is APCO?

Chocolatier Australia are members of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), who are a not for profit leading the development of a circular economy for packaging in Australia.

Their vision is a packaging value chain that collaborates to keep packaging materials out of landfill and retains the maximum value of the materials, energy, and labour within the local economy.

They work with governments, businesses, and other organisations from across Australia’s large and complex packaging value chain to develop the insights, resources, and programs that are needed to build a sustainable national packaging ecosystem, which includes facilitating the delivery of Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets, an important step on the pathway to a circular economy.

As members of APCO, we have protocols and standards of packaging recyclability and accountability that we need to maintain.

Do you have any Gluten-Free products?

As all of our products are made on the same equipment, we do not claim they are gluten-free even if they don’t contain gluten. Please always check the allergen statements for the declaration information on gluten.

Are any of your products suitable for Vegans?

No, unfortunately our factory is not equipped to produce vegan products.
